Filmarmalade
The founding strategy for both Marmalade and Filmarmalade is to publish contemporary works of visual theory that reflexively interrogate the ontology of the practice and production of ‘medium’.
This overall theme has been developed so as to address a perceived tendency abroad to see and understand the visual, only through the register of established critical textual discourses that somehow, leave the various mediums of representation strangely silent.
The artists book publisher Marmalade and the artists film and video DVD label Filmarmalade therefore, grew out of a desire to promote and distribute works that allow artists the space to think the visual, not by a slap dash regress to legitimising texts that permeate the apparatuses of the culture industries, but simply through the act of a sustained looking, talking and working with and through media.

Kelvin Kyung Kun Park’s INVITATION TO A PEACEFUL CITY , poetically mediates on the various forms of cultural resistance and simple quotidian ways of making do, that a variety of displaced Korean villagers have made after being first displaced by the Japanese and then the American airforce. Park’s work sensitively speaks about the conflicts that has arisen between the locals who are now tied into the economy of the base and others who still live under its shadow.
Kelvin Kyung Kun Park recently screened work at Recontres Internationales, Paris, the Seoul Independent Film Festival, Seoul, the LA Freewaves, Media Arts festival , Los Angeles and at the B&W Gallery, California Institute of the Arts, California. He was born in the South Korea and lives and works in Seoul.

SAMUEL AND I, SIMON AND I AND LADYBIRDS

Miranda Whall’s three works SAMUEL AND I, SIMON AND I AND LADYBIRDS, all depict a number of young women engaged in autoerotic activity, whilst seemingly unaware of a series of large birds, fish and cats that float, perch or mull around the white back ground that surrounds them. Whall’s animations make strange our relation to watching these intimate moments by juxtaposing knowingly quaint watercolour renderings of scenes of female masturbation with wild life.
Miranda Whall recently exhibited work at the Gimpel Fils Gallery, London, the Skol Gallery, Montreal, the Vane Gallery, Newcastle, the Schuster Gallery, Berlin and at the Museu de Arte Moderna, São Paulo. She was born in the United Kingdom and lives and works in Aberystwyth.

Julia Dogra-Brazell

Julia Dogra-Brazell’s PLOT, assembles an interlaced bricolage of visual and auditory elements, that form together without any obvious narrative scheme or chronology to create a smooth continuous mnemonic frieze that works to produce a forever delayed sensation of reverie. PLOT spins out a web of minor intrigues and false narrative trails, that invites us to wander within its intricate arcadian structure.
Julia Dogra-Brazell recently screened work at the Serpentine Gallery, London, the International Festival of Cinema and Technology, Seattle, the Louise T. Blouin Foundation, London, the Smith Street Gallery, Melbourne, Paperveins Museum of Art, New York and at the Lux Salon, London. She was born in the United Kingdom and lives and works in London.

WHERE A STRAIGHT LINE MEETS A CURVE

Mirza & Butler’s WHERE A STRAIGHT LINE MEETS A CURVE, first began as a visual transcription of the early feminist novel Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, which through the process of collaboration with the sound artist David Cunningham, developed into an epic meditation on the nature of pictorial space within experimental film. This theme is achieved simply by showing how the daily passage of light, hitting the walls of a small white painted room, can transform its geometry into a complex shifting field of dematerialised colour, space and light.
Mirza & Butler recently exhibited work at Monika Sprüth Philomene Magers, London, the Whitechapel Art Gallery, London, Kunsthaus, Zurich, Architecture and Film Biennale, Graz, the Serpentine Pavilion and at the Thomas Dane Gallery, London. They are also founders of the artist film production space, no.w.here and currently live and work in London.

LATE BIRDS
Sara Preibsch

Sara Preibsch’s LATE BIRDS, is a fantastic and yet strangely minimal record of the view from an elevated train by night, as it meanders through London’s East End. By exposing this otherwise everyday experience to film, Preibsch transforms the nature of this journey into a dizzying non-stop phantasmagoric play of reflected light, which revolve, turn within themselves and sweep up again to create the ultimate hallucinogenic carnival ride.
Sara Preibsch recently exhibited work at Vine Space, London, Kölnischer Kunstverein, Cologne, the Images Festival, Toronto, Les Rencontres Internationales, Paris, Färg Fabriken, Stockholm and in 2008 she received a LAFVA award for the production of her next film. Preibsch’s photographic work was also recently included in the monograph Hultsbruk Ready-Maids published by Marmalade and Edition Solitude. She was born in Sweden and currently lives and works in London.
STILL LIVES
Alexander Schellow

Alexander Schellow’s STILL LIVES, depict a shimmering nocturnal world, populated by anonymous bodies whose presence we sense through the moonlit aura of a ghostly electric fluorescence. By capturing the moment between stillness and life, Schellow’s animated drawings allow us to see this nether world, as one mark nervously shifts into another, as an alien and mournful space.
Alexander Schellow recently exhibited work at Steirischer Herbst Gallery, Graz, The Stuttgart Kunstmuseum, Centre Pompidou, Thessaloniki Biennale and at Ute Parduhn Gallery, Düsseldorf. He also recently completed the book work Storyboard published by Merz Academy and Edition Solitude in 2007. He currently lives in Berlin and teaches at the Metropolitan University, London.
PREEMPTIVE DISAPPEARANCE
Francisca Benitez

Presentation of the film: Francisca Benitez’s PREEMPTIVE DISAPPEARANCE, describes the effects of the Patriot Act on artists living in New York as told through the tender recounting of the experience of someone who discovers, when returning home one day, that her husband has been arrested for taking photographs ‘in the wrong place’. Benitez’s film slowly draws us into the emotional turmoil and sense of loss that is felt when someone close to you disappears and allows us a powerful and dramatic insight into the personal insecurity suffered by many people after 9/11.
Francisca Benitez recently exhibited work at the Westport Arts Centre, Connecticut, Exit Art, New York, Smack Mellon, New York, Centre de Cultura Contemporánea de Barcelona, Valenzuela Klenner Galería, Bogotá and at the Storefront for Art & Architecture, New York. She was born in the Chile and lives and works in New York.
